Written on . Posted in , .

The sun was shining on the village of Belleek on Sunday 10th July as the Belleek Development and Heritage Group hosted the Belleek Regatta for the first time since 2019. It was a fantastic day of cot racing which started with 5 junior teams competing for the 2022 Fred Ternan Winners trophy which was presented on the day by Florence Ternan.

The morning races were followed by the senior team races with a total of 10 teams competing in the heats. The competition between the teams was evident on the water throughout the day. Two teams, Maguire Fuels and Gormley Contracts rowed their way into the the final. The competition was steep throughout the tournament but Gormley Contracts took first place and winners of the Fred Ternan Memorial trophy. The trophy was specially made by Belleek Pottery and in memory of the contribution the late Fred Ternan made to the tradition of cot racing and to the Belleek Regatta.

Spectators not only had the opportunity to take in a spectacular day of exciting cot racing but also had the opportunity to enjoy demonstrations of Heritage skills and memorabilia on display on the day. Demonstrations included open fire griddle baked soda bread, blacksmithing, willow weaving and memorabilia of days gone by from railways to Belleek village memories.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part on he day and to the event organisers and volunteers who made the 2022 Belleek Regatta a huge success. This event was supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Department for Communities , Circle K and Belleek Pottery.
