Tour around the Castle with the most hospitable welcome
11 am During your tour of the Castle, you will discover many memorable stories of life behind the oldest walls in Enniskillen. We are fortunate to know so much about medieval Fermanagh through the chronicles of the Annals of Ulster and bardic poetry. Enniskillen Castle is first mentioned in the Annals in 1439 when Domnall ‘the Freckled’ Maguire takes his brother Tomas prisoner in his own castle.
Your tour will take you to the Lakelands Galleries with treasured artefacts on display, from ancient butter buried in the bog to keep it fresh, to one of the oldest surviving medieval Irish instruments, the River Erne Horn.
12.30 pm Lunch stop (soup & sandwiches)
1.30 pm ‘The Maguire Chalices: Lost & Found’. Always a popular feature of our Weekend, this talk tells the tale of the five important Maguire chalices and how they have made their way across the world to locations in Ireland, Scotland and Canada. Maybe one day they will all find their way back to Enniskillen Castle!
2.30pm You’ll experience an afternoon inspired by life in medieval Fermanagh. Meet historical characters from Enniskillen Castle’s past and sample some of the food and refreshments on offer during one of its many banquets. Listen to bardic poetry written in praise of the Maguire chieftains – just be careful not to offend the Poet! The afternoon will end in music and song.
5.00pm End of the second day
